The Blazer came to the school as one of two projects for the high school program from a friend of one of our lab assistants. The Blazer was already converted to two wheel drive and lowered with a rear axle flip. It didn’t have an engine or transmission, so the engine bay was completely empty. The rust had just about won the battle on the Blazer, and I had to try to figure out what the students could fix and yet learn something and still produce a nice quality repair. After talking to the customer he decided not to fix it and just handed over the title, saying that we could do whatever we wanted to do with it. After looking it over, we started by replacing the left bed panel and the entire rear floor pan. After most of the metal work was done it, was starting to look pretty good, but the engine bay was still empty. The program acquired an engine and later a transmission, and with some help from an outside corporate contest that the class entered, we were able to purchase everything we needed to get the K5 running. The goal is to build a roll cage in the back by the rear tailgate and window and install a flat screen down to the tailgate glass to play videos promoting our school at car shows.
