Like a lot of people, my truck, which was new in 1987, started out in the family. Later my grandpa bought the truck from my uncle. In 2009 my grandpa had to park the truck because it started slipping out of park. In 2010 my grandpa retired and we then started working on the truck. At that time I was in the 8th grade with hopes to have the truck done by the time I graduated from high school. We began to search for parts online and that’s when we found LMC. We subscribed to the magazine and we were on our way to a rebuild. Most of our parts came from an LMC catalog.

We began to take everything out of the cab as well as our parts truck. Once we were done with that, it left us with the frame, the motor and the rear end. My grandpa and I sandblasted and painted outside before it got too cold. In the colder weather is when we did a lot of our welding. We also visited our local junkyards searching for all interior things needed.

We changed the bench seats out for two bucket seats. Those seats came from a 2003 S10 which had been in a local tornado. Out of the 2003 we also got the carpet that was in good condition. We patched paneled the bed where it was needed. We had also put stainless steel brake lines on. By now, it was time for my senior year of high school. I was able to take the truck in my automotive class and work on a few small things. The truck was finished enough to drive and take to car shows.

Like most other cars it is still not completely done. We have another bed to put on it, along with a newer rear end with disc brakes. Since the Street Rod Nationals, I put on new slotted rotors and upgraded the brakes. Within the next couple years the plans are to replace the 2.8 V6 motor with a 327 that came from a 1968 corvette. Most of the S10s I have seen have 350s in them. I am looking for something different. That is why my plans are to put the 327 in my truck.

Throughout the seven years, it has definitely been a fun learning experience with my grandpa. There have been a lot of memories and bonding put into my truck. I’d like to take the time to thank my grandpa for all his help and knowledge in this project. I couldn’t have done it without his help. LMC has been with us throughout this journey providing us many quality restoration parts that we have used on our project.
