Since I was just a year old, my mom would take me for rides in the 1990 Ford F-150 custom. It had the 300 straight six motor, with a 5 speed manual. I loved that truck for years until it was eventually sold, and had plans to drive it once I got my license, but my uncle eventually ended up with possession of it and sold it. Since then, I have wanted various trucks, F-350’s, older style fords, old Toyota 4×4’s, even some small cars.

One day it hit me. I got back into Ford’s. I remember hearing my dad say he may not have enough money to help me buy a truck once I got my license. I knew I had to buy it myself. I got a job at a cattle ranch, thanks to some longtime family friends. That gave me enough money for a decent truck. Just a few months ago, I went scrolling on craigslist just out of the blue, and found a green, 1977 Ford F-150 custom, 4×4. Interesting thing was I’d always wanted an old 76′ highboy, but I just would search down the years on craigslist, when I got to 1977, there it was. I knew my dad wouldn’t be all for it like my mom would, so I asked her and my step dad to take me to go look at it, and they were all for the idea. However, she told me I had to have dad’s approval first. He said he doesn’t care if I get it, but he thought I should get something else. I said “Nope, I’m getting this one.” The day I was supposed to get it, I almost didn’t and probably never would have got it if mom’s bank hadn’t been opened. My step dad was supposed to take me to look at it, but he had some stuff at work that kept him late. My bank closed at 5, he got home at 5. Thankfully, their bank didn’t close until 6:30. The seller wanted $1800, but I only had $1400. My mom said they’d help me out with $200 of it, making it $1600. When we got there, I immediately knew I was gonna end up buying this. The guy was the 2nd owner who’d driven it out to a town called Kingston Idaho. He was a nice guy, let us test drive the truck, do the whole used car check routine. At first he didn’t want to take $1600, he wanted the full 1800. But he said he was in my shoes when he bought his first truck. He didn’t have enough, so the owner let him buy it for cheaper. The guy sold it to me for $1600, and not a penny more. Everything on it was perfect, it ran like it should, no issues mechanically. Cosmetically, it could use a little work here and there. There is not a single bit of rust on that truck, it’s just got fading paint and a few dents. The 1st owner had notebooks from 1977, which he wrote down everything he’d ever done to it. I love this truck, and it’s like my baby, you know? I plan on doing a few upgrades and whatnot to it, and have already purchased some of the parts from LMC, and plan to order from them in the future. My plan is to start collecting old Ford’s throughout my life, and restore them, and will use LMC for each part, nut and bolt. I am keeping this truck until the very day I die.
