My name is Kenny and this is the story of my Chevy truck. I purchased my 68 Chevy C10, short bed, step side in November 2004 for a mere $500. I was working as a mechanic for UPS- I guess this is where my love for trucks started. The truck started life as a Navy workhorse. It was used to haul things around a Navy base. When they finished with it, Rich, a coworker of mine, purchased it at an auction. He used it for several years as his daily transportation. When he finished with it, Harry, another coworker of mine, bought it and used it to haul trash to the dump and haul hay for his horse.

As I’m sure you can imagine, it was pretty beat up by now. One day it stopped running, and Harry pushed it out to pasture in his field. There it sat for a few years. Apparently his horse didn’t like it much –he ate the paint off the hood and fenders. During a casual conversation with Harry I mentioned that I would like to find an old Chevy truck to fix up. Harry commented that he still had that old Chevy, but it was pretty beat up and rusty. I bought the truck, towed it home (lost about 20 pounds of rust on 95 on the way), put it in my garage and jumped in with both feet.

I took it apart down to the frame and started to clean and replace every piece I could. I cut the frame, boxed it and tubbed it out. Money was tight so I did a little at a time. Prior to retirement, work on the truck was slow. After I retired from UPS with 30 years of service, I started a part time job to support my “truck habit,” as my wife calls it.

I installed a 454 engine, 400 turbo transmission and a 9-inch Ford rear end with 411 gears. My progress slowed down at the beginning of 2014- too many jobs on the “honey do list.” Then one day when reviewing the maintenance records on the family vehicles, I happened to notice the date I brought the Chevy home. I was shocked to see it had been almost 10 years and I had never driven it. After tackling the honey do list, I kicked into high gear and finished it.

All the mechanical work and about 90% of the body work was done by me. The only thing I didn’t do was spray the paint. It’s been a long ride, but I finally finished my dream. Well, I got it on the road- they are never really DONE! I’m also sending a picture of my Suburban.
